Ask if she has a minute, give her the letter, sit down, and wait for her to read it. Don't just give it to her and walk away. Give her a chance to process it and respond.
I'm so nervous every time, especially leaving them so short staffed...we had the goodbye party for the guy in my dept that left today, they were all making jokes as to how much work is coming my way :-/
Well my boss left! Is it OK to give it her boss? I really wanted to get this over today.
If you're trying to make it an official two week notice I would give it to her boss, and maybe send an email telling your boss(and CC her boss) that you wanted to tell her in person but you missed her.
Actually, katestar, the best thing to do would be to give it to your boss while she is in a meeting, or at least conversing with several higher ups. Mention that although you appreciate the time you worked there, this isn't the sort of job you want to stay at for any length of time, as you're sure she understands. Be sure to laugh after you say that. When you have done that, go to the bathroom and begin flushing rolls of toilet paper. Do this until the toilet backs up and begins flooding water out of the bathroom. Then yell "woops, sorry everyone! I guess I just have those last two week jitters!" offer to buy them some tacos to make up for it.
Handle it professionally. Give it it the next most relevant person in the chain of command. Take time.....don't rush it. Give appropriate notice. As much as your new employers may want you, the existng one's deserve reaonable treatment, and your new boss will aprreciate that you handle things properly.
Just a importantly, who knows what lies around the next bend. Your current boss comes to work for your new employer? Your firms merge? Your current boss starts their own business and they call you to come work for them? Don't ever burn any bridge in the job world. It is a mall place, to be sure.
