I've been thinking about doing a civil engineering graduate program at Tennessee Technological University but I just moved to Nashville and am not sure how the job market for civil engineers is right now. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to do this if I won't be able to find a good job afterwards.
I don't know about the Nashville area, but I have a degree in civil engineering from a top 25 university, my E.I.T. registration and slightly less than 3 years professional experience. I have been unemployed for 19.5 months. My location is Arizona, but I have been applying out of state as well to increase my chances. I think it is safe to say that it is pretty terrible out there.
I'm in North Carolina and it is tough. I finally landed a job after a year since I've graduated. It is an internship though but could lead to a permanent position. It is with a pretty big and well known company.
If it is what you want to do then go for it. I don't know how much longer the market is going to be for civil engineers but it has to get better eventually. I suggest finding work with the government or with a company that gets contracted for a lot of public work.
