We are looking to move our family to Wisconsin and would like to live near Madison or Milwaukee (within a half an hour to an hour drive). We would like to live in a family oriented town that has lots of places to hike, cross country sky etc. It needs to have good schools with a low crime rate without being snooty.

We are looking for a home in the $225,000-$300,000 range. We would like to get a 3 bed 2 bath house (over 14,000 sq ft) with a back yard around 8,000 square feet or more.

Currently, we have been looking at the Dane and Waukesha counties. Anyone have any suggestions for us?

Delafield, Hartland, Wales, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Nashotoa, Chenequa, Okauchee Lake. This is what I would consider for the Milwaukee market. Although south of 94 you have the lower unit of the Kettle Moraine which is just beautiful.

Do you want to live within an hour of either, or within an hour of both?

Lake Mills
Rock Lake
Farmer's Market
Glacial Drumlin bike/hike trail-cc skiing in winter
awesome library system
good schools-public and private
decent community center
variety of churches
right off interstate 94
Walgreen's
ice skating rink in Commons Park in the winter
great Mexican restaurant
Snap fitness gym
Lakers gym
decent pizza places
Oskri organics
Dollar General
Grocery store

I've lived in both areas, Madison area is VERY "snooty" -Milwaukee area more down to earth.

Look at Hales Corners.

Well that certainly opens up a ton of options, probably over 100 towns covering a couple thousand square miles. So I'm going to make a recommendation that puts you within an hour of both, just for good measure. In fact, it's already been recommended upthread: Lake Mills.

Lake Mills is nice. I'd also say Oconomowac is really nice as is Nashotah. Hartland and Hartford are nice too! Those are mainly Milwaukee market, Lake Mills is about either way maybe closer to Madison?

I'd also check out Sun Prairie, Cambridge, Verona, Middleton. It sounds like you have quite a bit of money to spend on a home. You could probably get a nice home for your allowance.

Good Luck!
