Hey JCAT - where in Palm Beach County did you move from? I'm moving to Waynesville in June from Wellington FL - what is your opinion about Waynesville?
I live in Waynesville. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Scenery is spectacular, people are friendly and helpful. I'd recommend it to anyone who is prepared to enjoy what is there and be willing to drive 20-25 minutes to big shopping (in Asheville).
If you have any specific questions, you can feel free to PM me. I'll answer what I can...and if I can't... I have other sources I can ask.
Ok great...I'm moving there in late June - my parents own a business there and I'm going to be working with them.....I already found a home there and I'm looking forward to meeting new people. I think it will be a big adjustment coming from West Palm Beach Florida. Are you from Waynesville? Do you go to a gym there? Can you sugeest a hiking club to join?
There are two good gyms, depending on your preference. The Haywood Regional Medical Center has a great, very complete gym, and last time I checked (don't quote me) was around $60/mo. I just go to the Waynesville Rec Center - which, in the mornings (pre-7am) is like your own, personal training zone (very quiet and nice) in addition to the pool, free weights, cardio equipment that they have at both places, they have a large basketball court area. I believe both have racquetball courts. The rec center price is less expensive per month, and I think, the better value. It's on Vance St, (go down the street that runs next to Eckerd).
I think there are many hiking clubs. The Blue Ridge Hiking Club comes to mind. I have been wanting to get out and do more hiking, but I always seem to have some project that gets in my way. I get out from time to time.
As with any place - it can be what you want it to be. I lived for 17 years in the Atlanta metro area before here 3+ years ago. I was ready, heart and soul for the change, and I was not disappointed. Others may not really be ready for the change of venue. As I said, people are nice, the pace is NOT the big city pace, and the scenery is spectacular... all things that I was looking for. I hope that you enjoy it here. I have made many great friends in this area. Bring your coat for winter, though. It can get chilly.
I am trying to get my brother to move to this area from S. Florida, too. I know he'll love it here. He is just wrapped up in a business right now.
Anyway - best of luck to you. I hope you enjoy it here.
Ok - great - thanks for the gym information. Wow $60 a month - that is way off the charts. I have been with many gyms and the highest monthly rate I've paid was $35. I'm also ready for the change - Florida has changed a lot - and the crime is out of control. I do not need a lot of excitement - my days of wild partying are over - I do enjoy going out with friends for dinner and drinks.
I realize that the weather can be cold - I have been visiting my parents for 12 years now - and I have been up there for every season - and some of the winters have been bitter cold!!

Thank you for all your help!!!
Now, as I said... I might be wrong about the pricing. You can look up the websites for the HRMC Fitness Center, (It's actually in Clyde, near the hospital), and also for the Waynesville Rec Center. Now that I think of it, my rec membership includes me AND my son, so it might be less for one person. The rec IS a little less than the Fitness Ctr, though.
By the way... the weather has been SPECTACULAR this week. We are due a sunny, gorgeous Memorial Day weekend.

Hello,
I've just discovered this forum; what a great resource.
I'm thinking about buying a duplex in Waynesville for a rental property. Do you ever have floods there?
You know how the news media is, they gave the impression the entire state was under water a couple of weeks ago.

Hey Dan,
Let me know what you need. Send me a private msg and I can help you without boring everyone else. One of my good friends knows all there is to know about the real estate market in Waynesville & Haywood County. She's a fantastic agent & very down to earth, too.
There was a flood in '04, but only certain areas of the county were affected. Waynesville did not suffer like other towns/areas around it. I only had about a teaspoon or two of water in my basement. Those in flood plain areas did not fare so well. It's all where you are.
Good luck... It's great here.
