Ok, let's spill the beans . . . where are the best (i.e., scenic, off the beaten path, unlikely to encounter hordes of people, moderate to difficult) hiking trails within an hour of Asheville.

Feel free to PM with any suggestions if you don't want to advertise your any hidden jewels to the general public at large.

Thanks!

I tend to need water for just about anything outdoors oriented so I'm biased. If hiking I almost always want a waterfall to be the climax of the expedition. This has been useful for me...a great Book is this one which you can grab at Malaprops downtown above Zambra. Happy hiking...

You probably don't want to head south of Asheville, b/c that's where the crowds tend to go...places like Graveyard Flats, Mt. Pisgah, Art Loeb, Black Balsam, etc... Now why do they all go there...for the scenery! Its beautiful.

If you want to avoid crowds, head a little less than an hour east of Asheville to South Mountains State Park. Its not the high-altitude mountain environ that you'd find on Art Loeb, but you'll find mountains, waterfalls, dense forests, and a lot less people.

I was just about to suggest the Art Loeb - it's usually too strenuous to attract a lot of tourists
