I'm looking to relocate to Boone, NC to go to school at Appalachian State University. But before I move i would love some feedback from the locals about the town and the college. If anybody has some tips for me that would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

It is a great school is one of the best locations on the east coast. I spent my first year and a half of college at AppState and loved it. The year-round climate in Boone is hard to beat. The university offers a wide range of challenging and well-regarded degee programs. The campus has been improved a lot over the past 10 years. Black Saturdays (home football games) are a blast and the football team is awesome! Surrounding campus are phenomenal recreation opportunities...hiking, biking, paddling, climbing, skiing, car touring, zip lines, etc... IMO, ASU and Boone is tough to beat!

My son is a Junior at App State. I cannot imagine a better place to be a college student. The town, surrounding areas and the college itself are picture perfect.

I loved going to App., it is a wonderful setting to be a college student as others have expressed here. The quality of education is also quite high. I think it is important to understand however that if you have aspirations to live in parts of the county other than the south after school, than the name Appalachian State is not well known and unfortunately can conjure up negative associations based on stereotypes.

Very few people respond positively when I tell them I went to App State. They often say, "Where?" Or they say that it is pronounced, AppaLAICHian. And then of course I must correct them. I do not know why those born above the Mason-Dixon use the long A to say Appalachian. But it is wrong, at least as far as the school name is concerned.

I personally like the name, but a school name like UNC - W brings with it more positive associations having the UNC as part of the name. People know about UNC.

But that really has nothing to do with the quality of the school. If I could make a decent living in Boone and the house prices weren't so inflated, I would live there again.

Default Appalachian State

In the last several years since App State beat Michigan in football, App State is much more well know now than in the past. My daughter graduated there and my son graduated this year and is going to grad school at App in computer science. It is a wonderful school, and both of my kids love it. Boone is the true college town. Hopefully, you have been down for a visit because it is not a big town. The Blue Ridge Parkway is nearby and it is breathtaking. Any kind of outdoor activity that you can think of is here. Asheville is a little over 1.5 hrs away and is a neat place to visit, and Charlotte is about 2 hrs. away. Come on down.

The College of Business is excelllent. I haven't seen stats in recent years, but ASU grads used to have the highest percentage (among other state schools) of passing rates on the North Carolina CPA exam. The College of Education is also outstanding, with ASU's heritage of being founded as a teachers' college. Other programs are well-regarded as well.
