Outlaw - We are going to be building in Madison County later this year - if and when we sell here - I would try looking at Weaverville - there are many posts from locals with much much more experience in the area than I have, but coming from Chicago perhaps you will feel the same way we do about the area. I would suggest renting first so that you can really get a feel for which towns feel most like home. Good luck.

Greenville/Spartanburg and Hendersonville are both good options. In your price range you should do okay in either and still find all the other things you are looking for. You are right, you would have a harder time in Asheville.

Price range of $170K and under in Hendersonville with 4 bedrooms would be about impossible, and would be a major fixer upper. 3 BR maybe. Hendersonville is a retirement city. SC is a better bet for lower housing prices. Spartanburg even better. You can get a very nice 3 or 4 BR house in a good area of Spartanburg for around $150,000.
