Hi. This is my first posting, so I'd appreciate your help. My husband and I are considering a move from FLA to the Asheville area. We're both transplants. I'm originally from the Bronx, he's from Maine, but we've lived in several states. We both love the mountains but want to be close to a city, too. No kids/schools to consider as we're both close (but not there yet!) to retirement age. We need to be close to hospitals, or if possible, a country jail or state prison (we both work in correctional healthcare right now. We're politically active (cross between Progressives and Libertarians) and appreciate political diversity. Oh, and lastly, we don't make a whole lot of money. Any feedback as to whether any western North Carolina towns could be right for us? Thanks for your thoughts.
There are quite a few correctional facilities throughout western NC. What is more important to you political diversity around Asheville or lower cost of living anywhere else in the area?
This is the paradox.
Asheville proper is going to be the more open minded and activists minded oriented. However, the more affordable places on the outskirts are much more conservative.
Heck, I'm an evangelical and the towns outside Asheville were too conservative for me.
You will probably like the weather though.

I agree. The City of Asheville is an island in a conservative sea.

I would think long and hard about moving to NC....As you've experienced, moving doesn't always make you happier. This is a conservative state. You'll likely feel out of place.
