Hello everyone! I know everyone has more pressing issues with the gas crisis, but I was hoping I might get a little input.

My family and I will be coming from Cape Coral, FL on October 11th to do some tent camping starting in Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and ending up in the Smoky Mountain National Park around the 20th.

While we have lots of hiking and sightseeing planned, we were also hoping to get to see the fall leaf colors. I've read about as much as I can as to the "average" time for peak fall color, I was wondering if any areas were seeing color yet? And for those of you who have a good eye for the coming weeks, how does it look for 10 to 20 days from now?

Thanks ahead of time!

Grandfather Mountain should be colorful during that time period at almost 6,000 feet above sea level.

Grandfather Naturalist Jesse Pope said, "We are starting to see some changes at the higher elevations above 4600 feet. Mainly Mountain Maple, which has a very pretty reddish orange color. We are also seeing Yellow Birch, Hobblebush, and many of the vacciniums, vary in colors from bright red to maroon, already in full color above 5,000 feet.

We recommend driving the Blue Ridge Parkway between Linville and Rough Ridge, especially the Beacon Heights overlook at milepost 305.

Asheville is mostly green but there are a few tress changing, probably from poor water resources, cicadas, or other diseases.

October 11 seems to be about the consensus primetime for the leaf season.

Boy, wouldn't that be good timing for me. Is that date the consensus for this season, or the average season?

I haven't seen leaves change color since I was a kid 30 years ago. How fast can things change when the weather is right?

Thanks a bunch, we can't wait. I was up there 2 years ago by myself, before I met my wife. It was the first time on the parkway as an adult. I absolutely fell in love with the whole area. Majestic.

Then, last June, on the way back from a trip to Indiana and PA, the whole family spent 4 or 5 days up there. We all had a great time. I posted a few pictures from that trip on the Pictures thread stickied at the top.

We would move up there in a minute, if it wasn't for my wife having a twin sister here in Florida, and they simply can not be that far from each other. So...we compromised. I'll agree to live in this inferno of a state and she has agreed that our family vacations will be in the mountains as often as I want them. We'll also be looking into vacation property there over the next couple of years.

Well, as one of the biggest Blue Ridge Parkway fans around I can tell you I COMPLETELY understand how you feel!! I get away up to the Parkway about once a month but would live there tomorrow if it were possible. Have you been to Doughton Park before? The scenery driving near it is so awesome! Can't wait for you to post new pics after you get back

PS - do you mind if I ask your route to get to Doughton Park after you get to NC?
