Yep, it's more about elevation than anything else at this point. Asheville is around 2,300 feet.

County High Points

Buncombe - Potato Knob (6,400)
Henderson - Little Pisgah Mtn (5,280)
Madison - Sandymush Bald (5,152)
Haywood - Mt. Guyot (6,621)

You will not find much color around Chimney Rock yet. We usually peak about the 1st-2nd week of Nov. A few Maples have begun to turn but that is about it.

The immediate Asheville area, including the Blue Ridge Parkway is at about 2500 to 3000 foot elevation, so the 4000 foot elevation you mention really doesn't apply here. I'm sure you will have better luck at Grandfather Mountain, etc. - The weather here is great just now. Great biking weather. I'm still wearing summer shirts (short-sleeves). But it doesn't get higher than about 74 now. And it should be trending down soon.

You can't believe how good that weather sounds to me right now. It was 88 and really humid today here. And that's about the coolest day, not counting rain days, since April? Ugh....

We enter NC on 95 heading north. We'll take 95 to 26, to I-77, to 21, right to the parkway.
Want to make sure you know about the Parkway closure at Mt. Mitchell? This means there is a detour off the Parkway down to Marion and then west on I40 to Asheville to get back on the Parkway to continue your journey to the Smokies.

I can't figure out when to get up to the BRP. I want to go to the Black Balsam / Shining Rock Wilderness area....just not sure if it is "peak" yet on that area of the Parkway. Anyone been up there the last few days?
