I've looked at Grove Park Inn and the Biltmore estate but it's just out of my price range for now. Any other recommendations or a good quality hotel for less than $400 a night? TIA

Won't be Biltmore quality, but if you want the Asheville area on the Parkway try this (views are really nice):
My wife and I stay at the Bent Creek Lodge. It's a bed & breakfast located about 0.5 mile off of the parkway where NC191 crosses the Parkway. Excellent food, ultra-comfortable accommodations, and superb owners.

I was wondering if this would be appropriate for well behaved children?
I know this is overly late (have no clue why I didn't see the reply)...
But to answer your question, I believe they have a policy of no children under 12. I'd say that a "well behaved" child over 12 would be better appreciated than the opposite since the vast majority of people who stay here are there to relax and enjoy a non-hotel atmosphere.
We (my wife and I, and our 3 boys ages 6, 5, and 3) stayed at the Little Switzerland Inn for around 125 I think per night. This was back in early June though. The guides all say that breakfast is included, but we were informed the next morning that this was not the case, and they had just discontinued that due to rising costs.
Either way, it was absolutely beautiful. The view out back is stunning. They have a restaurant there that is pretty good as well.
Also, about 4 or 5 miles off the parkway in Spruce Pine is a couple of cheaper motels in the 80 dollar range that we stay at most trips there. Small but clean.
The Pisgah Inn & restaurant is closed until late March of 2009.
