I am also interested in learning more about the Hendersonville area, including Tryon. I will be retiring in 2 years and I am looking for an area with a milder summer. I have lived in Charleston SC for 22 years and have had my fill of hot, humid days and nights. My adult children live in the South Carolina, so moving out of the Carolinas is not an option, not even on my radar screen. I am looking for an area with 4 seasons, reasonable housing costs and friendly people. Any thoughts?

Thank you for the climate data. It seems that Hendersonville is about 5 degrees cooler in the summer. Both Tryon and Hendersonville are more comfortable than Charleston SC in the summertime.

Yep, back in the days before air conditioning, prominent families from South Carolina's lowlands would relocate to the area to escape the summer heat and mosquito-borne diseases such as yellow fever and malaria. Hendersonville is around 2,200 feet above sea level.

Thanks again. I am leaning toward Hendersonville because it is larger. Any other cities in the area that are worth considering?

That was my thinking too. I wanted to be within a few minutes of shopping, i.e. supermarkets, Home Depot, Lowe's, restaurants, hospital, routine medical & dental care professionals, interstate highway and such. However, I didn't want to be in Asheville's bedroom community sprawl either.

At around 11K, Hendersonville is the largest city in the county. Some of the nice bordering communities are Flat Rock and Laurel Park. Around 20 miles out is Brevard in Transylvania county. It is worth a look-see, but too small for my personal tastes.
