Looking for information and impressions of the Tryon-Columbus area and all along the SC/NC border there.
What places have high rolling hills rather than mountains?
Are the horse people friendly to newcomers or snobby?
Is this area exclusive or mixed rural?
Is it convinent to Greenville, Spartanburg and Asheville for "exploring"?
Looking for a place where a conservative artist can go to a good museum with hay in the back of her truck.

For rolling hills with gorgeous views of the mountains check out Northern Spartanburg County or the Green Creek area of Polk County. The town of Landrum in Northern Spartanburg County is delightful with nice close-in neighborhoods, great schools, and a delightful little downtown.

The horse crowd generally stays to itself. Some of them are snobby but I live here year round and rarely encounter them.

Our area is mostly rural. The towns (Landrum, Campobello, Tryon, Columbus, Saluda) are tiny. Shopping is very limited - the closest Wal-Marts are 20 miles away - but grocery stores are convenient. The highway system - 26, 74, 176 - get you to Asheville, Spartanburg, and Hendersonville quickly for their larger variety of shopping, dining, and medical facilities. However, you'll find just about everything you need here.

Tryon is small but with a sophisticated and cosmopolitan air about it. Columbus is the county seat and "commercial hub" of the area, Saluda is quaint and tucked in the mountains. Green Creek, Mill Spring, New Prospect and rural and pastoral.

The locals are conservative but the mix of people here make it an interesting place.

Its a great area to live. Our company's guesthouse is available for stayovers (Woodlane House - Your place away from home) if you want to check us out.

Great questions! Although we're not horse people, we are interested in many of these things, too. Especially liked your last sentence.
