What is the best ski resort a day-trip away from Asheville, NC?

The best ski place can vary, but the closest is Wolf Laurel, it's an easy drive north of Asheville, maybe an hour or so.

Wolf Ridge (formerly known as Wolf Laurel) is closest. A little further (1.5-2 hrs) away, Ski Beech and Sugar Mountain offer more and longer slopes.

Here's a webpage that summarizes all three.

I've been to both Beech and Sugar, and rate them about equal. Sugar has maybe more variety, while Beech offers a bit more challenge.

don't waste your time in the NC mountains...Drive to Snowshoe in West Virginia and spend a weekend...best skiing in the Southeast....

As for Sugar and Beech....CROWDED, ICY, Basically 1 Run with little branches and SLOW LIFTS! Also lift tickets at some Utah and Montana resorts are much cheaper....pretty funny if you ask me...
