I am sure you all have been answeing a ton of questions on the area....so I'm sorry for asking somemore!!! But everything that has been asked doesn't fit what I am looking for.....so maybe it just don't exist. So I will try anyways.
Here is my situation:
I have a family of 5
I'm thinking about accepting a job at the casino in Cherokkee
So here is the problem. I currently live in a big city north of Detroit....for the record not in Detroit. But every post that I read has a lot of small towns and longer drives to get anywhere. And I am not used to that at all! I am looking for good schools for my kids (10, 6, and 5). But I want to be around things if at all possible. I don't mind the small town feel, but again if I need to run to the store I dont want to drive 30 min to get a gallon of milk!!!

Any info would be great!! Thanks everyone!!!!
Try to understand, the Cherokee Casino is in the middle of Cherokee land - beautiful, rugged wilderness and forest. It is over an hour to a city of any size, Asheville, though you could get things like milk and groceries in Cherokee and nearby Waynesville.
I'm just not sure this move is going to work for you in all honesty based on your priorities.
Can you plan a visit down to see the area for yourself before you decide on the job?
You won't have to drive 30 mins for a gallon of milk. There's a Food Lion in Whittier, which is basically Cherokee. And it'd be about a 15 min drive to Ingles(like Krogers) in Bryson City. But for electronics & such, it'll be longer drives. Its beautiful in the Cherokee area, but it'll probably be a culture shock for you. I'm from Ohio originally & my brother used to live in Farmington MI, and I can tell you the people in the Cherokee are very different. The natives, I should say. They're nice, but just have a different view of the world as Native Americans... Hopefully you enjoy doing outdoor rec, kayaking, hiking, etc. Its perfect for that.
Well thanks for all the info. And yes I think it will be a huge culture shock......that is what makes me nervous!!!! I don't mind the woods and stuff. However, we are not an outdoorsy kinda family.....well not yet!!!! I am all for a new experience!!! What about schools?
Think of it as if you moved to 'outside of Petoskey', or a little town in the UP...
that is similar to many areas 'around' Cherokee/Casino.
It isn't Troy.
Not sure what they are paying at the Casino for most entry level jobs, but I would not rec'd even thinking about moving to the area without a job firmly in hand and some hard 'Net searching for rentals within commuting distances.

OP, have you ever been on an Indian Reservation? If so, then you know what the area is like around one. If not, then I would recommend you consider what it could be like. Then make your decision about whether moving so far and to such a rural area is in your family's best interest. and if the job is a good one, what you consider commutable keeping in mind the roads, curves, etc. It is not a straight flat line from point a to point b.
Well I wouldn't be moving for an entry level job. Its a chance for me to move up the ladder a bit. The pay really isnt that bad. So the job isnt the issue at all. I would be happy to take it. Again the problem that I keep running into is about the area and the schools. I have been online night after night checking on different areas. I really dont want to drive more than 45 min to work. And I dont want my kids in poor schools either.

It looks like the schools in Jackson County are decent, that is they get rating around 6,7,8 out of 10 from Greatschools.org. Towns like Sylva and Dillsboro are about 15 miles from the casino over windy roads. Jackson County schools have a slightly better rating than Swain County schools, but Bryson City is closer to the casino. I don't see any private schools. Good luck with the decision.
