Is Charter Communications the only option for cable/internet in Boone, besides satellite? $110/month for cable(w/dvr) + internet seems a little steep...

That's what I'm paying for my bundle with high speed 'net, digital box with basic lineup. Satellite will not give you good online results as they cannot match the speed of cable. DSL (telephone) just plain sucks. Back before X-box live and streaming content DSL was fine . . . not anymore!

Charter has everyone over a barrel. Prices have risen steadily over the last 4 years. Every time I get to my cutoff point ($145!!!! NOT!) I call and threaten to leave and they send me to the "retention" office. Their job is to retain my business at all costs . . . within reason. So, I renegotiate the package and get a better rate. I'm at $110 now.

Another problem with Dish is getting line of sight with the spacecraft. Not sure about the other providers, but Dish's sat lies to the south, fairly low to the horizon. If there's a hill in the way (Like at my house) cable is the only option.

Yeah the trick with cable is you have to call in every few months and threaten to switch to keep the intro rate. However if you're a little tech savvy or you know someone willing to show you how it works, you can easily get by with just internet. Cable tv is a huge ripoff to begin with and if you only watch a handful of shows anyway it's much cheaper to use streaming services or netflix or other means. You're already paying for the bandwidth with internet, why bother paying twice? When I lived in Boone I only had internet and didn't miss wasting $60/month to watch commercials. Still kept up with the shows I liked and wound up reading and doing stuff outside a lot more. Plus Charter up there carries half the channels they do in other places at the same price.
