Granted, we live in the middle of nowhere, but there are gun shots being fired all the time. I'm used to deer season and wild turkey season back in NY but it's cardiac arrest season for me here.
I guess I'll get used to not flinching whenever I hear a rifle or shotgun, but is it just OK to shoot all the time, any time in Cherokee County?
Otherwise, it is a common county law that people do have the right to shoot at targets on their own land if it is at least 500 feet from an occupied building. Check with your sheriff's department if you have any doubts.
I live in NW Asheville, and as I was reading this thread, trying to figure out why anyone would want to kill a groundhog, gunshots went off. I flinched. :-) Its like that in Buncombe Co too, Kirbymom. Will never get used to it.

They can cause catastrophic dam failure if they burrow in the wrong spots. However they are still adorable while doing so.
Welcome to the south. Its not just a WNC thing, you can find it in any rural area of NC, SC, and GA in my experience (probably more). Its a combination of all the things people above have mentioned. Also remember there are a lot of farmers around and they have to shoot various varmints to keep their animals/crops safe.

In my area, the target shooting happens like clockwork on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Either they are letting off steam, or they are "doomsday preppers".
