Planning a fall vacation in western North Carolina and wondering where the must see places for fall foliage viewing are? Also looking for neat little towns to stop in.

Is Grandfather mountain worth going to?

Thanks
Jasper

You don't want to miss Grandfather Mountain, that's for sure Also plan to visit the nearby town of Blowing Rock, Linville Falls, Linville Caverns, Mt. Mitchell, Little Switzerland, The Blue Ridge Parkway's Center of Crafts (near Asheville) and Biltmore Estate in Asheville - just to name a few things

Rather than "place(s)", you have to keep an eye on the calendar, and the elevation:
for the past several years I've noticed that "full color" has come later and later, even up
here at our 5,000 ft elevation. The early/mid October has shifted to at least mid-late October,
with very colorful leaves holding on into November. And, in the lower elevations, (2,000 to 4,000 ft),
it is even more so, in terms of later in the season.

All this is predicated on western NC dodging the leaf ripping effects of any hurricanes,
or strong storms later this season...

lovesMountains offered some good spots; and, anywhere along the southern portion of the BlueRidgeParkway,
or the less busy Cherohala Skyway offer a multitude of views. I rec'd either on weekdays as opposed to weekends,
in leaf peeper season.

Besides the BRP and CS, some outstanding two lane blacktops in my experience are:
Rt 209, from Waynesville to Hot Springs, Rt 215 from Canton to the BRPkway, Rt 206
from Waynesville to Brevard, Rt 64 west from Brevard to past Highlands, Rt 129 from
Robbinsville to Deal's Gap and beyond...etc. GOOG maps is your friend.
GL, mD
