I've seen Confederate flags in all most every part of the state, and McDowell County is not the only place in WV and the U.S. that a school system had to have state or federal intervention. I'm not goin to sit here and say Southern WV is a bed roses, but don't exaggerate things with your own prejudices and preconceived notions. I'm a West Virginian, first and foremost, Anybody from the Northern Panhandle, Eastern Panhandle, Ohio River Valley, etc, is just as equal to me
All the way back to the time prior to the formation of West Virginia, there was a huge difference between Wheeling and Welch, Morgantown and Monroe County, Bluefield and Berkeley County. Wheeling, Morgantown, and Berkeley County all voted to form a separate state and remain in the Union, while pretty much every county south of Jackson, Braxton, and Randolph voted to remain with Virginia and placed their loyalties with the Confederacy.

Several years ago, I asked a young friend from Mingo County if he wanted to take a vacation in New England with me. His reply was that He'd never been north of the Mason-Dixon Line and never intended to. (However, he DID know where to get moonshine. )

The view that Southern West Virginia is part of the Deep South Bible Belt region is still deeply ingrained in people living in that area. People in the northern panhandle see Charleston as foreign territory, let alone the REALLY southern counties.

The old stereotypes about southern WV are alive and well.

Its the Obama's administrations policies that has him in hot water with these people and the politicans are thinking as Americans instead of party hacks. The EPA is out of control the economy stinks and all Obama has is the blame game with hints of racism thrown in so much for Hope & Change.

The increase in coal mining has happened in spite of federal policy, not because of it. The only reason it's increased is because China and other developing countries are buying it from us. (Not that I mind, though; it's a rare transfer of wealth into the United States.)

You must have a poor understanding of economics. It is the developing countries like China that are importing more coal from the US than ever. Underground mine jobs are up in WV if you had looked at the links posted in this thread. The big utilities are moving away from coal because natural gas is far cheaper and burns far cleaner than coal. Those are MARKET forces at work and nothing to do with politics.

If you looked at my prior posts I know that foreign buyers are using our coal I did work for the NS railroad.
My son is going to lose his job with CSX because of Obama and his EPA superceding the US Congress and coal is cheaper to generate electricity than natural gas.It is politics and this green energy agenda with the UN and the child King.

Show me a link that actually proves coal is cheaper to generate electricity than natural gas. Why do you think all the big utilities are switching over? Economics! Also, natural gas generating stations are far cheaper to build and construct with lower emissions, and the coal generators that are closing are completely obsolete and too expensive to upgrade.

Where do you get these non facts of yours? They are building gas fired brown out plants because of the EPA regulations and demand.Coal fired plants are being regulated out of business of course they will go to other costlier energy sources. You will think to costly to upgrade when you get Obama's green energy bills that will sky rocket in his own words...

I see the reality-denying has gotten stronger in this thread...

People might want to check out this whole natural gas vs coal thing. Coal has been losing ground to natural gas for decades (Analysis & Projections - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)), and that trend hasn't really changed since Obama took office.
