It's starting to get close 8 or 9 days out, if all goes well, I'll be moving from the Chicago suburbs to WPB.

All I'm interested in is the climate and the beach, I could care less about what's happening in the city of WPB. What are the nicest public beaches to goto? Are they all part of wealthy Palm Beach or does WPB have it's own?

Even though winter is just about over, what is the water temps like during the coldest months?

I'm hoping that being in WPB that I get a climate that's more like Miami and less like Daytona Beach.. I've only been to Florida once, Daytona Beach early one April years ago, and it was too cold for swimming. It was colder than early summer at Lake Michican in Chicago, which is really wierd. I know Daytona Beach is pretty far north compared to WPB, with WPB being closer to Miami (but still well north of Miami). I'm just wondering if WPB is still close enough to Miami to have similar weather and water temps, even if not exactly the same.

West Palm Beach does not have its *own* beach. You will drive the mile over the bridge and use Palm Beach. The best public beach is the one accessible via Okeechobee Blvd/Royal Palm Way.

Otherwise, you can drive a bit North to the Jupiter/Juno area for what, in my opinion, are the nicest beaches in Palm Beach County. The water temps in Palm Beach County are a lot more similar to Miami than Daytona Beach!

As stated, WPB doesn't have it's own beach as it doesn't border the ocean. The public beach just over the bridge on Palm Beach is nice though Juno blows it away as far as quality of the water etc. The water in the Juno area is almost unnaturally blue. It looks like something out of a post card. I believe this has to do with how close the gulf stream comes to Florida at that point. Though Lake Worth gets a bad rap most of the time (and rightfully so in most areas), I have always enjoyed Lake Worth Beach. It has a much more regular person sortof vibe to it than most of the other beaches nearby. I believe they are remodeling the old casino building that's right on the beach, but there was a really great breakfast place called John G's right on the beach. Hopefully it will move back in after the construction.

My stuff should be on a truck by Monday moving from the northern Chicago suburbs, and then I should be flying down on Wednesday

Besides checking out the local beaches in the area, I really wanna take a drive south, pass through Miami, maybe see Miami Beach/South Beach and head on down to the Keys to the nice beach at BahiaHonda State Park. I hear that's the best beach in the Keys (which are not known for their great beaches). From what I've read, most of Florida's other great award-winning beaches are on the Gulf coast and too far north for me. Although I will eventually wanna see the white sand beaches of the Gulf coast sometime later this year.
I'll also have to check out Juno beach since that'll be only about 15-20 min north of WPB.

WPB has the same climate as miami.. theres's no difference.. Gulf coast beaches are good too.. but just be careful the threat of sharks is alot higher.. you will love SFLA... i promise you will never look back.. dont listen to the negativity on this board.. learn it for yourself... WELCOME!!

ps - and as for cruising to miami.. dont get lost! lol stick to South beach or Brickell/ Downtown

Where abouts is your suburb located?

Try driving a bit north to Singer Island. It has a great beach, and some shops.

You are allowed to go to the beaches on Palm Beach Island (where the rich live!) It's public! GREAT SURF there in the winter!

I don't recommend any Ft. Lauderdale beaches, sorry.

South Beach seemed like it had more seaweed than anywhere else, but it's great to people watch, and get some drinks-we all know that...

I was SO disappointed with the keys, esp Key West. Poor quality beaches, but fun to visit... It's a L-O-N-G drive though...

Good luck!! Wear sunscreen #50+++

I can't image being so excited to move to WPB....especially if you have only been to daytona once in your life....
the weather is hot & humid year round, more than a quarter of the people in SoFla were not born in this country.
the only people truly enjoying FL are the rich snowbirds...
I have lived all over SoFla for the past 20 years so believe me i know what im talking about.

you are probably thinking FL is great, sunshine, beaches, endless fun...after a few years reality will set in and you will most likely move. also, i've lived in chicago too...

Since i've moved i've realized SoFla is Great to visit..but i would never move back ever.
seriously i wouldnt go to a grocery store w/o carrying a gun anywhere south of WPB.

anyway, give us an update....how are you liking WPB?
