I'm looking at a condo at the north tip of Lake Osborne, not far from Palm Beach State College.

Is this a safe area in terms of crime?

its got good and bad areas mixed all over! go check the area out , do it on a bike you can get places you cant with a car, and you can stop and look and listen,, I have seen some bad things going down in nice areas ,, but that happens every were in the USA! be street smart, know your neighbors, lock your doors, keep items out of eye sight of the snatch and grab folks , you will be fine

Lake Worth is listed as one of the 100 most dangerous cities in the U.S. I don't know how the data was compiled, but Google it and see for yourself.

I know which list you're referring to. That list uses the stats released by the FBI (which are also used by MorganQuitno and City-Data). It's basically a list of the top 100 cities over 25,000 with the highest violent crime rates.

I think the confusion is that Lake Worth actually pretty much IS only east of I-95, technically speaking.

For residents of the city, eastern Lake worth is thus east of Dixie Highway/East of Federal Highway, which gets progressively better going east.

I got that, but in reality Lake Worth goes all the way out to the turnpike (and beyond to 441).....while not city limits it does still have the LW address. West Lake Worth is lots of subdivisions, most are nice and family oriented (Lake Charlestown comes to mind).
