Hello, this is my first post and I have done some research on here before asking for help but I feel the need for your assistance. I currently live in Kansas but have been invited as one of the top 3 out of 55 applicants to interview in person for a college professor position at Palm Beach State College (the main Lake Worth, Florida campus). Although I would enjoy not having to deal with snow each winter, I would much rather not deal with the rampant crime and utter rudeness of the local people I keep reading about on the threads here about life in Palm Beach County. Is there anyway I could have a 30 minute or less one way commute to the Lake Worth campus each day for work? I'm just looking to start over in my late twenties so I'm looking to rent an apartment or a house while paying back student loan debt. I am single and I do not presently want to purchase a home or condo in the area. My other question is what are your thoughts about the area? Is it just "a great place to visit" but one you would want to stay as far away from as possible to start a family for the long term? I also just got invited to interview for a full-time community college professor job in Harrisonburg, Virginia which would be closer to family relatives.
Thank you all in advance for your honest feedback.

Im a student at Palm Beach State College at Lake Worths State and the school isn't that bad and the area isn't as bad as the other areas in the cities. I honestly prefer the Palm Beach State Gardens campus over the Lake Worth since that campus has nicer people and the area is a lot more beautiful maybe you can ask to work their instead during your interview? I know professors who work at both campuses since they are 15-20 minutes apart. Best of luck!

How very rude of you to say that.
Apart from that, Harrisonburg would be the best place to go, by far.

If you don't mind cold winters, Harrisonburg would probably be your best choice. Harrisonburg is in a beautiful area of VA. It's lifestyle is much closer to Kansas than Florida would be and it never hurts to be closer to family.

Why not come for the interview and look around for yourself? Palm Beach State (it only recently was a community college) has been growing a lot in recent years. Plus, even if you are offered the position and don't take the job, it can be a good networking opportunity. Lake Worth, Delray Beach, and West Palm Beach have some cool areas within easy driving distance of PBSC. And even if you don't stay here forever, it is a nice place to spend a few years. I am an academic from a long line of academics who have lived and/or been raised in South Florida - so I think it is a fine place to raise a family... Couldn't get away from it even when I tried!
