In the summer months flights from here to London are about $1200. That's just the flight for one person. I assume owenc's £10000 was for a family of four. Then there's food and transportation.

for a family of 4 yes it will be about 3k
for a single person it can be much much cheaper. £700 for a week is totally do-able. (for 1 person)
but of course u need to get some spening money with you for souvenirs, tickets etc

cause you dont know how to look

Cheap Flights from Manchester to New York | Skyscanner £421 return Manchester - JFK

it took me about 5 mins to find that, after looking for a bit longer i could find flights below £400.

Also theres plenty of package holidays to America, and group tours which bring the price down. even at my college last year there was a NYC trip for 3 days all inclusive for £600, staying at a hotel in Manhattan.

oh yes you will - Cheap Flights from Manchester to New York | Skyscanner and if you booked that in january it would be about £400.

You have no knowledge about tourism industry, so this chat is pointless.
and people dont go to NYC for the weather in case you didnt know.
so youre asking why go in December?
Christmas in New York - YouTube maybe thats why
