It's not the language of the world. I'll happily admit we are ignorant to other languages in the UK, people learn English but how many of us speak French or Spanish fluently?

Why should they have to sing or speak in English owen? That's very narrow minded.

^^ Though French or Spanish aren't really useful for a Brit, I don't really see the need to speak either fluently.

Oh the offense, a French singer singing in French! By the way, they've sent a couple English-singing artists like this one:

Sébastien Tellier - Divine - YouTube

Not that he fared any better than the French-singing ones.

Yes it is. NO offence but you really don't get very far in the world as a singer without speaking English. If the singing is not English then I am not interested.

Did you know that France has sent only once an entry to the Eurovision which wasn't sung in French?

Guess in what language that song was?

I just think the French hate the English. It really is evident when they are only one of the few who didn't sing in English.

If you're listening only to music sung on English, you're missing a lot.

Younger posters don't remember that the rules were changed only some years ago. Formerly the entries had to be sung in their native language, but it was seen as unfair. Languages like Serbian, Finnish or Azeri don't maybe sound very nice in a, say, French ear. Also it gave an unfair advantage to UK and Ireland, as they could sing in a language most people understand.

I don't think we're ignorant - people here just see little reason to learn other languages when English is so widely spoken, especially in northern Europe. Also, when people here learn a language in school, they will often forget it completely as they have little reason to use it on a daily basis - my mother and sister could both speak French semi-fluently, but neither can speak French now apart from the odd phrase. Ditto for my grandmother who used to be able to speak Spanish, and can still utter a few phrases, but cannot for the life of her hold a conversation in Spanish. When learning a new language, you must practice it frequently so you don't forget it.

French is also more widely spoken in the UK than people think, too. According to the EU itself, over 20% of the UK's population can hold some conversations in French. I'm not sure how accurate it is though.
