I just went outside looking at the phenomenon called silent thunder. Lightnings strike all the time illuminating the sky, but no rumble can be heard. It's so cool!
edit @ 0:30. The lightning show is still going on there. It's kind of spooky.

Does it happen often there? Here not so much but it does happen on occasion. Fiancee's first American thunderstorm was one with silent thunder. We had about 3 lightning strikes per second, all C-C

In my experience "silent" lightning means the storm is too far to be heard. Could mean it would arrive in a while (hour?) Some of the largest thunderstorms I remember locally had constant flashes of lightning in the distant with no thunder, it was impressive once it got here. And loud.

Nope, there was no actual thunder after that. The lighting strikes were also right above us, which made it even more strange.
I saw 'silent lightning' in July - there was a storm some 61 miles away, but the anvil was huge - it covered a good deal of the sky. The lightning lit up the entire eastern sky, as if it was coming here, even though it was many miles away and was not coming towards here. It was really creepy and eerie, especially since it was misty that night.
There was another one like that this month which had really bright sheet lightning, but it was a lot closer. Still no thunder though.
Never seen lightning overhead from an actual storm with no audible thunder, but have heard thunder many times without seeing lightning.
On another note, has anyone here seen lightning with fog? That occurred on the east coast of England in July.
