Here's the storm track. Another classic coming from the southeast and up the coast. Northern Jet Stream digging down south allowing cold air to spill in and you get this active sub tropical jet stream, you have coastal storm strengthening thanks to the interaction of the Jet streams.

Here is the current Alerts. Winter Storm warning in Kentucky and Virginia. Might be more warnings and even blizzard warning in Northeast.

NWS NY discussion.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
353 PM EDT Sun Mar 11 2018

Dry initially as weak ridge yields to northern stream shortwave
and undercutting short-wave pivoting through the Carolinas
and across the western Atlantic. Models remain well clustered
with coastal low developing and tracking toward or just east of
the 40N/70W benchmark. Latest 12Z ECMWF remains an eastern
outlier per differences noted in shortwave progression.

Assuming the track and intensity forecast is correct, a 970 hpa
low near or just east of the benchmark, would expect heaviest
snow and highest accumulations to be placed along the coast,
east of NYC.

Have expanded the Winter Storm Watch from Monday evening
through Tuesday to Long Island (east of NYC) and southern CT,
with highest amounts east. A foot of snow is possible in spots
over SE CT and eastern LI.

A look at the current 850mb temps and where the storm is. It's over Tennessee this afternoon. A new Low will form off the SC coast tonight and that TN low will give into it. All this as the trough swings in will all below freezing air at 5000' (needed for snow)

Via Topical TidBits Play the loop with the slider at the top and see how it unfolds. Looks like it gets dragged back in for a little bit as the trough catches up to it.

Atlanta still has more snow than DC this season! Lets see if DC can get some from this to finally beat them.
I forget how much they need. An inch??

We're supposed to get 4-8 in here, beginning overnight tonight. I will take some photos after it is all over. It's supposed to be cold after this snow, so hopefully it will stick around for a few days.

If we get 4 in or more, it will be the biggest snow of the season. We have had below average snowfall this season, and I'm hoping this storm can somewhat make up for it.

Incredible March. Should of known. Your right, snow is lasting longer too. Staying below freezing aloft so surface cant warm past 30s/40s. Sun angle can only do so much. Hope u get 4+.

This is crazy..

In 2014 "Polar Vortex" words became popular.
This year its "Bomb Cyclone" . lol

Basically for a storm to "bomb out" it has to drop 24mb within 24hrs. This storm is projected to drop 33mb. So it qualifies as a "bomb"

Edit: "Bombogenesis" is the real meteorological word. Slipped my mind for a minute.

We are going to get a direct hit. I hope to god it is cold enough that the show isn't heavy and sticky. If it is... we will have power outages galore.
