Min of -18.5C in Maquinchao this morning, the coldest since July 2007.

so now the rank is :

1° Balmaceda : -20.8C/-4.9F(June 18)
2° Maquinchao : -18.5C/-1.3F(June 20)
3° Australian Alps : -6.7C/19.9F(June 1)

Hardly Balmaceda or Maquinchao will get colder than that, but I believe that some place in Australian Alps can get something between -10C/-15C

Time for the official shortest day photo, taken at around 8:30 am. Temperature around +0.5C

Hopefully will get a sunset one tonight from the west coast, although the forecast is for the weather turning to custard.

Very lovely wet and cloudy month so far . Makes up for the ghastly sunny and dry conditions experienced last month!

174mm in the city and my area 200mm falling on all but six days month to date with around 100 hours of sun - nice

Second best - of this year that is - after March and nice to have a break from the sun once again

Lovely to see lawns very darkly green once again

YTD rain totals (ending 9am, 23rd) for some eastern suburb sites:
Ob Hill (city): 865mm
Botanic Gardens: 951mm
Dover Heights: 913mm
Randwick (St): 865mm

Southern states - especially those who rely on frontal rain from the west - not faring very well MTD with Adelaide on 2mm, Melbourne 9mm, Canberra 2mm and Hobart 2mm.

Perth was staring at one of its driest June's on record but the downpour of 61mm to 9am put paid to that however still well below average. Perth is not having a lot of luck this "wet" season so far with more sunny, cold and dry weather forecast over the next seven days.

Another bonus of the wet and cloudy conditions is that it hasn't been too cold at nights but this is expected to change with the next four nights expected to drop into single figures - no doubt helped by nasty icy westerlies . I've heard "mutterings" that next month will start off with a ECL - we will see. Hoping for a repeat of the July 1931 event when nearly 325mm (due to an ECL) fell in the space of a week or 1950 when Sydney recorded its wettest July ever with 336mm falling.

Meanwhile in Invercargill, NZ, it has been much drier and "sunnier" than usual. If no major rain falls until the end of this month then it will be the fifth consecutive "dry" month. Regarding sunshine, my brother said it's been much brighter and sunnier than he can remember for June. A quick check shows the MTD total standing at 76 hours at the manual site and EWS 83 hrs. To put this into perspective, the average at the manual (1932 - open) site is 74 hours and EWS (2003 - open) 87 hours and there is another eight days to go...

Wellington is getting pummelled by lovely rain/showers and cold southerlies as I type and also worth noting that Wellington has not recorded a monthly (sun) total over 200 hours since April last year.

They don't stay offshore, they are moving from the ocean to the continent.
