Lots of people live in places such as Reading, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Camberley, Woking, Guildford, Redhill etc, and commute in. Takes around 20-60 mins by train roughly.
Would you have liked to have gone to the Tomorrow World festival they had here last month? I couldn't believe how many people went to that thing, despite the extremely high cost of doing so.
They might not have it anymore, at least not here in Georgia, due to the transportation fiasco they had - some folks were stuck in the dark all night, since the shuttle buses quit running. Maybe they'll limit it to a reasonable number of people, like 20,000, and have it in the city, where people can take public transportation.
Yeah those huge festivals are crazy. Most of the time you can listen/watch online, anyway.

It's 3 years old but you get the idea.
This right here illustrates why big cities are such a colossal fail.
Hopefully a 100 years from now, the big cities will be in decline, and the population will live in small towns and middle-sized cities, like Syracuse. I won't be here of course, but I'm sure I'll see the trend start in my lifetime. Let the Great City Exodus begin.

I like the idea of medium sized cities. I'd rather find a job in a city like Syracuse and live outside the city. On the other hand, having a job in NYC offers you no good living situation. You're either in extremely crowded suburbs or the city itself.

Southend and Colchester are quite cheap considering how close they are to London. Both places are cheaper than here. Are they a bit rough?

Housing affordability in Australia is ****ed, so bought a houseboat for a quarter what a 3br house costs in a climate I actually like. Life is no different to an apartment, it's got a full gas stove, grill and oven, microwave, bedroom, a proper crapper, 2 big ass gas bottles and I just purchased a reverse cycle aircon..... my life is as comfortable as ever.
Considering buying a flat here in Hungary and live here maybe 1-2 months of the year, prices are unbelievably cheap... a 500ml beer is a dollar, (seen 500ml cans on special for 50 cents), the cuisine is legendary, there is seriously good trashy reality TV (Csaladi Titkok es Magannyomozok - shows best enjoyed drinking) and flats can be had for 50k. Mental. Got family and mates here so seriously thinking about it.

I think I am starting to become more like you, NSD... the Syracuse area does seem rather attractive to me. But part of the reason for me is its proximity to home. But I've been there before and it's quite alright there. Plus they have very nice winters with plenty of snow.
yeah, it's a tragedy. seems like a mass murder epidemic is running through the nordic countries. the school has the same name as my favorite snus too - kronan.
btw, i find it interesting that sweden only has had 1 shooting before this - and that was in kungälv - in close proximity to trollhättan. if you look closer, you find the same closeness to hyvinkä and jokela - which both had mass shootings. if you have one mass murder, it seems to increase the chance x1000 fold for a second one. same can be seen in colorado, where they've had mass shooting year after year (columbine, aurora etc). i suspect the copy-cat effect is stronger than one can imagine.
