If you ask Steve DiMartino that question, I can almost guarantee you he will answer and have a cool one too. Im gonna assume its where the vorticity instability was at the time which was moving so fast that it was quick to happen. Keep in mind temps werent above 60° in the column I think so there was nothing there to keep it going. No heat/humid air. I would say its similar to how we can get thundersnow. Thunder and temps below freezing. 1 thunder and done and was where the most unstable part of atmosphere was. Also, dont forget to check your local WFO discussion. Sometimes they will get technical.

Little of both maybe. Probably more common here as it can warm up a bit more and probably cause you missed it. You really have to listen for it. Its not going to be constant or maybe loud for that matter. Maybe tv was on, or in a store, or biking with music on, or sleeping.

Also note.. I said CT.. not here specifically. Like I will use todays Thunder in SE CT as "it happening". Saw a report that it was indeed thundering. And GR8CAT map confirms lightning was around.

You don't see that very often in January!
Nope... just sad to see too. Lol. But I know something Mark Twain taught us...

It went over us about 20 minutes ago here in Bergen County NJ. No lightning or thunder, just a brief burst of rain, then gone just as quick. The sun is out now.

Thanks! God we need more of these posts from everyone.

My cousin near Poukeepsie, NY said he had extremely heavy rains and even hail. Didn't last long,

There's no rain on the radar but why do I see people walking around with umbrellas on the street?
