I can't see the photos, but with a January mean temperature of around 2C for Bellagio, the Howea wouldn't survive there.

Beautiful pictures, seems you like a lot the Belpaese...
Along Lake Como there are many subtropical plants since Northern Italy is a subtropical paradise, but those kentia palms (howea) at Villa Carlotta are just too much.
They are likely potted, and they are brought indoor in winter, as well as philodendrons.

So Bellagio goes below 10°C in winter?

Joe, where did you find climate data for Bellagio? Milan-Linate is a bit warmer than that at 2.5°C and I'd expect Bellagio to be significantly milder given its location right between the mountains and the lake (though obviously not mild enough to host kentias after checking the requirements ).

It happened... Temps in the 80s without "real" shade with full leaves. only select few trees starting to get them now. 83F(28C). Did some hiking locally again before the temps spiked.

First... Ahhh, the college years. Some in shorts.

Ready to hit the road... You would think this was northern CT? Nope. New Canaan, near the coast. LOL

May 4, 2015

Here.

Same spot as April 17th and Feb 16th. Stamford, CT 10-15 minutes from the coast.

Someone had plans?

Refreshing. I felt the water and it was darn cold. Guessing Low 40s? Will bring a water gauge next time.

Closeup..

Spoiler

Don't know what kind of bird this is but cool.

Temps spiked to mid 60s within 1 hour. Bugs all around and I noticed I came closer to wet lands and still brooks. Very uncomfortable hiking and swatting. Ugh

Green! lol

AWESOME smell of fresh Spruce and Pine and then I realized... Christmas Trees! Guess they dumped it in the woods for composting instead of trash. Awesome scent reminded me of Winter.

Looking up.... Nope.. No shade.. It's good I did it in the morning.

Here's the Trail Map of this park. I went all the way to the top of the yellow trail (Second Loop Trail) made some lefts and rights along the way back. 3 Miles total today

Spoiler

^ ^ Nice pics. So weird to see all those bare trees at this incredibly late date - and it being hot too.

The yellow bird is a goldfinch...lol.

Oh yeah, a lot of our birds have left for the summer... Another reason the next 5 months isn't my happy season.

If it wasn't for Paris in 2 weeks, I'd be sinking into depression, big-time.

Thanks for the bird identification. lol. Enjoy Paris!

Same 2 photos I posted in the Spring thread and 1 extra one.

Same road and spot but looking opposite ways. Taken 4 hrs ago 15 minutes from me.

Need color? Definitely around. Pinks, Whites, Purples, Reds, Greens. Mag leaves dropping now. You can see that 1 Maple tree DOES have Leaves (not fully mature yet though). Some select trees do have them.

Spring Photo Thread 2015-19599_10205104971877173_3764414910046292322_n.jpg

Took this pic 10 mins ago, at my friend's house. Sorry for poor quality I took the pic off my phone (I really need to invest in a camera ). Been really loving the sunsets lately here, beautiful colors and dramatic clouds. Picture really didn't do it justice.

Not sure I would call this a subtropical paradise

I looked up the stats for Como on Wiki, as I figured they would be fairly similar.

Howea can handle temperatures of about -2/-3c for short periods and certainly wouldn't handle maximums close to freezing. They are cool summer tolerant and grow well in a climate like Wellington, but have little chance in a climate like Christchurch.
