I am absolutely stunned how much colder it is in the middle of Antarctica, than anywhere up north.
Note their seasons are opposite
Winter (January) North Pole average temp
-40 Fahrenheit / -40 Celsius
Dark all day
Summer (July) North Pole average temp
32 Fahrenheit / 0 Celsius
Sun all day rotating sky clockwise
Winter (July) South Pole average temp
-100 Fahrenheit / -73 Celsius
Dark all day
Summer (January) South Pole average temp
-15 Fahrenheit / -26 Celsius
Sun all day rotating sky counterclockwise
I wonder if in January (Northern Hemisphere winter) there have STILL been days where South Pole summer temperature dropped below North Pole's winter on the same day
The South Pole is also over land. I'm sure the South Pole is colder than the North Pole sometimes even in January. Maybe more so in February. Seems to be a pretty big difference between those two months:
Isn't there a new station on Antarctica that's colder than Vostok?
There is two stations reported in OGIMET that put consistently challenge temps to Vostok: Davis lgb 46, Concordia and University Dome Fuji
This month lowest temp in Vostok:-69.1C, in Davis lgb 46: -74.2C
Men temperature, July 2013:
Vostok: -65.9C
Concordia: -66.6C
Dome Fuji: -65.7C
The South Pole is on a continent, with a high elevation above sea level, and full of ice and snow that reflect incoming solar radiation back out into space.
The North Pole is on an ocean, and therefore has an elevation of sea level, and has much greater maritime influences for the obvious reason of it being an ocean.
The Arctic Ocean provides a moderating effect in both summer and winter.
