15 F/-9 C and cloudy at 10:15AM. Today's forecast high is 20 F/-7 C...which would tie the record low max for March 3rd. Tonight's forecast low is -2 F/-19 C. The record low for March 4th is -1 F so perhaps it's in jeopardy. Expected to remain below average for the rest of the week.

Snow cover map of the US is amazing for this time of year, though I think some of the totals shown may be inaccurate. The extent of snow cover should be correct, though: Intellicast - Snow Cover in United States

Struggling past 19°F here. Pretty much lower than the normal low this time of year or where the normal max is in January. Feels like 5° with wind

NWS Blacksburg Virginia employee taking measurements. What's crazy about all this is that its March and typically snow is wet and heavy, I'm seeing reports of high ratios and fluffy snow as far south as northern Virginia. that is NUTS!!

Is it just my imagination, or is this one of the worst Winters in decades for the eastern 2/3 of the U.S.? I never recall so many Arctic air incidents. I live in Denver now, and typically, we don't get single digit weather after mid February. It was down to 8 or so at my house over the weekend.

We keep having the Arctic air "back in" from the NE for short periods, and then it moves away and we warm up considerably. We had well below temps over the weekend and a little snow, now a week in the mid 50s to upper 60s and temps are supposed to stay at/above freezing at night. It's just crazy, but at least we've been having nice warm days between Arctic days.

No. It's not your imagination. As I said earlier some records and situations out there is being compared to part of the 1970s and even early 1900s and early 1990s.

Pretty much anyone 18yrs or younger hasn't experienced this type of winter.

Usually it's just cold, or just snowy, it's not common we have both continued cold and snow.

One good way to way to see aside from looking at records is looking at the Lakes. Hudson bay froze over faster than previous years on record. Was fully frozen by December.

March 2nd Great lakes have 90% ice. Does anyone realize something about that??

We have the 3rd largest amount for any period!
We have more ice than last month!
We are close to the all time record of 95% which happened 2/19/1979!

It's March!

Wow! That's just insane. And isn't the opposite side of the N. hemisphere having an unusually warm winter? I just checked Moscow weather and it doesn't look that bad at all with highs above freezing and lows in the 20s/30s. As if Winter is sort of "lop-sided" this year. But then I think I remember when the U.S. has had unusually warm Winters, Russia and Europe were much colder than average.

Yeah, if all continents in Northern Hemisphere experience the same extremes then something is really wrong. LOL.

Usually it's one or another. but that does lead an interesting question. How many times has all continents experience a winter like this at the same time?

I'm not familiar with Europe so can't comment too much but here's the current temps & 500mb heights.. Looks like a trough in Western Europe keeping things cool but nothing big?

Yep, the snow's quite fluffy here, but there's a thin layer of ice underneath. Hard to clear the car completely of snow/ice. The roads here are about 50% covered in a layer of snow on top of ice, even after having been plowed. Not many cars on the road. I went for a walk and saw more kids on ATVs riding on the road than cars, lol.
