Any climate that falls short of Trewartha's definition of subtropical but can grow palm trees unprotected is warm temperate. Any other climate that is in the temperate latitudes is cold temperate IMO.
What do you consider warm temperate or cool temperate?
What do you consider the requirements for the above climate classifications?
Warm temperate: Sydney, Charleston, Bordeaux,Auckland, Santander and Cape town warm temperate.
Cool temperate: Bergen & Aberdeen
Basically I would only consider Oceanic and some moderate Subtropical climates as either cool temperate or warm temperate
In the Trewartha system....Temeprate climates have 4 to 7 months with mean temps of 50 F/10 c or higher.
There is no distiction made between "warm and cool temperate".
There is a distiction made between warm and cool summer ....with 72 F/22 C the line. So for example NYC is warm summer and Berlin is cool summer.
In terms of actual climates it can be tough: A group like Sydney, Charleston, Bordeaux, Auckland, Cape Town is a odd mix. While all there winter temps are close (near 50 F or so)....a station like Charelston is far warmer for 4 to 5 months a year than any of them. Charelston has summer mean temps close to 10 f warmer than Sydeny and Cape Town...and close to 15 F warmer than stations like Auckland or Bordeaux. So some of these stations would likely not be in the same climate group in a perfect system I guess.
Also remember, ....Temperate and subtropical are climate GROUPS...while warm/cool are applied to each group as a SUBTYPE. For example both San Fransisco and Perth are Cs or subtropical climates, but Perth is warm type (Csa) and San Fran is cool type (Csb). At least the way I understand it.

Well we can grow quite a few different species of palm unprotected in the UK, but I wouldn't consider us as having a warm temperate climate, I'd say we were cool temperate...

If the UK is cool temperate, how would you classify cities like Ottawa and Harbin? They are much colder in winter than anywhere in the UK
I wouldn't consider Ottawa or Harbin has cool temperate maybe cool continental or Hemiboreal.
