The melting season in the arctic is almost over. It looks like 2018 will end up far from a record but still well below the 1981-2010 median.
I was doing a double take remember seeing record High ice levels this summer... then I remembered... that was for Greenland....and maybe just the East side. lol.
"May and June were markedly cooler than the average, although total melt-day area for the ice sheet is near average as of early July. Winds from the south and high air pressure over Iceland caused a spike in melt area in early July. To date, heavy winter snowfall along the eastern side of the island and a near-average melt season means that the ice sheet has gained a large amount of mass. However if the melting intensifies, ice sheet mass could rapidly decline in the second half of the month."
I'd love to see Greenland Heat up! It would mean a Negative NAO (Blocking/Warm High over there). Which means cold would stick around and drop into NorthEastern U.S more
Yeah, it's been a pretty weird year for the arctic sea ice. Ice extent has been steadily converging toward the long-term average over this melt season so if that continues for the rest of the year we may see a rather heavy ice buildup compared to recent norms. Also curious what's been going on in eastern Greenland.
Anyone know what they are focused on the Chukchi Sea Ice anomaly other than being impressively low?? Is this an important part of the Arctic? Bigger chunk? What about the Arctic as a whole? Other areas?

I think it's because that area is right around Alaska so it influences Alaska's weather. For a while in October Arctic sea ice extent was the lowest on record, but now it's in second or third place.

Ahh, thanks. Makes sense and it influences our weather as well..
so Arctic Sea Ice is 2nd or 3rd lowest but the Chukchi Sea Ice is insanely lowest on record. When is record anyway? I forgot to check. 1950? 1900?
NPR story recently about sea ice off shore at Utqiagvik is/was lowest ever, dated late October.
Whalers there had yet to sight a single bowhead for hunting, which was unprecedented.
Hadn’t heard about Chukchi but it makes sense. Ocean temps have been far above average
there for quite awhile now.

It was lowest on record from Oct 13-30. Where did you find info since 31st?
