As I stated yesterday, we had a sunshine boost in the latter half of the month. This managed to raise the overall average to 7.0 hours/day but below the long term average (LTA) of 7.4 hours/day.
Both minimum and maximum average temps were above average with the maximum coming in at 21.4C (the LTA is 20.6C).
A total of 11 days recorded rainfall - this is almost double the average although total rainfall, at 51.2mm, was about average. They all fell in consecutive days, between 10th - 20th (inclusive).
All in all, about average, but from my own point of view, possibly the most pleasant July I've ever had in terms of sunshine and daytime temps!
July 2012 continued the warm streak the entire state has been experiencing for almost a year now in Duluth, Minnesota. The average temperature of 71.9F (22.2C) ties it with July 2006 as the warmest month in Duluth history. The average high was 82.4F (28.0C) and the average low 61.3 (16.3C). The normal high and low for July, according the 1981-2010 records, is 76.3F and 55.4F respectively.
It was also the month with the most 80+F days on the Duluth climate record, with a full 24 days with highs at or above 80F. The warmest temperature was 92F (33C) on the 16th; the warmest low was 67F (19C) on the 4th and 16th; the coolest high was 69F (21C) on the 6th; and the coldest temperature was 53F on the 10th.
What is remarkable about July 2012 in Duluth is not the extreme heat but the prolonged warmth, especially the warm nights. From the 10th to the 20th all hourly observations were at 60F or warmer, and if we bring the threshold down to 15C (59F) the period extends from the 10th to the 27th. The 7th to the 16th inclusive comprised a ten-day streak of 80+F temperatures. KDYT (Duluth Sky Harbor, a station near the harbor on a sandbar) had even warmer nights, with an average low of 66F.
Also probably significant was the high amount of moisture in the air. The average hourly dew point for the month was 60F (16C), peaking at 72F on the 3rd. Duluth International Airport experienced about 27 hours of dew points at or above the oppressive 70F (21C) level.
Precipitation-wise, Duluth's precipitation pattern allowed for recovery from the June 19th-20th floods. There were eight thunderstorm days, though only four of them resulted in any notable rainfall. The 24-hour maximum rainfall was 1.58" on the 25th. 0.66" followed on the 26th, and the total amount of rainfall was 3.09", running roughly 0.64" below average for the month.
Number of Cold Nights (<= 5C / 41F): 19 [Highest on record for any month, previous record was 16 nights in July 1998, 2001 and 2010.]
--------------------
Rainfall: 34.6mm / 1.36" (21% of average) [Lowest on record (at all metropolitan sites bar Rottnest Island), previous record was 61.5mm / 2.42" in July 1876
Highest Daily Rainfall: 9.0mm / 0.35" (7th)
Rain days: 8
Sunshine Hours: 228.7 hours [2nd highest on record after July 1918]
Average daily sunshine: 7.4 hours
Highest daily sunshine: 9.5 hours on the 25th
Lowest daily sunshine 0.2 hours on the 31st
--------------------
Also happens to be the 4th driest January-July period on record with the low rainfall recorded in both May and July.
Abysmal month breaking all the wrong records, just felt like a cool version of summer.
I rate it an F.

The first half massively sub-par in terms of low maxima, very low sunshine and persistent rain, the second half close to normal including four hot days with full sun between the 23rd - 26th. Overall it was actually slightly warmer than last July.
* Compared to the nearby official site (whose data is not yet available) this site is overexposed - the actual highest temperature was around 29C.
** I suspect the unofficial site of underreading as has been the case in previous months - the official total is probably about 10% higher.
National figures:
CET: 15.45C (-1.25C)
England and Wales Rainfall: 112.1mm (+68%)
England and Wales Sunshine: 165.3 hours (-19%)
A similar story to locally: up to the 20th rainfall was well over twice the average and sunshine under half what we would expect, but the final third of the month was drier and sunnier. I haven't seen confirmed figures yet but parts of eastern Scotland will most likely have recorded their dullest July on record (Edinburgh recorded seven consecutive entirely sunless days, and Aberdeen was even worse!), and local precipitation records will have also gone. Taken on its own this past month has been nothing that abnormally bad but in the context of a very poor June and high rainfall in April and May (the April-July period has been the wettest in over 250 years of records) although it hasn't looked like threatening all-time cold records this might turn out the poorest summer in living memory if August is sub-par.

Overall a warm month with little relief from the north. Nine days were at 90 F or above. There were a couple days here and there that the humidity dropped off to comfortable levels and some afternoons with tolerable temps (low 80s), but there weren't any notable cool fronts. July 20th was by far the best day of the month - cool, wet, cloudy, and a little breezy. It felt very nice after weeks of heat.
Ironically I spend the most time outdoors during my least favorite part of the year. I was outside for at least 8 hours a day about 20 days or so this month.
