Interesting that as the temperature goes up in BA it tends to cool in Sydney. This is probably related to the Southern Hemipshere 'Long Wave Trough'. Some discussion can be found here:
Sydney and Perth's temps are also highly negatively correlated, when the Australian LWT is situated at Perth's longitudes, we usually have high pressure and above average temperatures, the reverse is true when the LWT is in the east. BA and Perth's temps may be positively correlated, but they are in separate LWT's- makes sense as they are 'opposite' each other in the Southern Hemipshere.
Perth's temps are decreasing at the end of next week, and heating up in the east, so perhaps BA will get a break at the end of next week too. It will be interesting to see if this is the case.
It was quite a cool morning today, with a minimum of 9.5C/49F. Amazingly this occured after a maximum of 30.2C/86F the previous day, and today it is expected to reach 31C/88F. Currently at 12pm it is 28.3C/83F.
Stanthorpe in the Granite Belt region of Queensland dipped to 4.8C overnight, while in Brisbane it only got as low as 19.9C!
Today was the first morning the really felt autumnal. Quite a large diurnal range here also with 5-24C/42-75F. The small town of Murchison inland from here, had 3-27C/38-81F today. It was the first sunny day in quite a while.
It was great to see the return of an old friend – East Coast Low – that happily arrived on Wednesday evening and had sadly departed by yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.
The prolonged periods of torrential rain were bloody awesome! Much flash flooding occurred in many suburbs and seeing huge volumes of water cascading over footpaths, steps, roads and edges of parks in the CBD was amazing. Even more amazing was seeing some photos of water cascading down the Bondi Beach stairs, too bad I was at work, I would have loved to see that with my naked eyes!
I have worked at the same site for 11 years now and have never seen Hyde Park like that! I am so glad I had the opportunity to see it.
Many suburbs recorded over 80mm/3.14in with some reaching 110/4.3-130/5.1mm/in.
Some media reports were greatly exaggerated of course including one describing this as a one-in-a-hundred-year flood (!). To be fair another correctly described this as the worst since the 1980s.
This event produced some interesting rain statistics:
The city (Ob Hill) site recorded 127.4mm/5.0in during the event -109.4mm/4.3in of this falling to 9am yesterday (Thursday) - and 18mm/0.7in since then to after midday.
Highest March daily fall since 1984 (163.8mm/6.4in to 9am, 24th).
Highest daily fall of any month since June 2007 (112.2mm/4.4in to 9am, 9th).
The MTD total now stands at 204.8mm/8.0in (158% of average) making this the highest March total since 2000 (248.4mm/9.7in).
Wettest start to any March since 1977 that saw 245.4mm/9.6in falling over the first six days.
For the record, for the month of March that is, the all-time high is 521.4mm/20.5in (nearly all of this fell from the 17-30th) set in 1942 including the highest daily (to 9am on the 28th) fall of 280.7mm/11.0in.
^^Certainly have had a few hot March's of late, last years being our warmest on record. Over it now; can't wait for some rain and cooler weather.
Maxed out at 38.9C / 102F today, once this heatwave is over we're still looking at standard sunny summer weather of 30C+.
