Oh, and 2011 was the warmest year ever here. With the coolest July in two decades.
second warmest ever really? Those temps look very close to the average for Paris. The average December high is 45F. It's hard to believe that a high of 50F would make this one the second warmest on record. I think you exaggerated a bit. can't speak for the whole continental US but many places in the Midwest and Alaska saw 15F above the average this December.

No, it was the warmest year on record for France, and the second warmest on record for the United Kingdom.

I've only been here just over 3 years but I generally find come mid November you can safely ditch jackets (even light jackets) until sometime in April but I found myself wearing a light jacket most evenings and even during the day. This could of course be due to gradual acclimatisation, but many locals were commenting on the abnormal cold.

I was surprised we broke the 200 hour sunshine month in the end - the total was boosted towards the end of the month.

I've commented on this before, but many outsiders do not realise how relatively mild Sydney's summers can be (the outside perception seems to be it is hot and dry).
Pity your December was so disappointing. I see Melbourne managed 272 hours! I want some of that to come our way soon!!

Motueka 41.08'S 8m ASL

Average max 20.2C/69.5F (-1.8C/3.7F)
Average min 11C/52F (+0.1C/0.2F)
Rainfall 276mm/11 inches (+178mm/7 inches)
Sunshine 199m hours (-47 hours)

Overall a wet, cool, and grey month. Oddly enough it felt warm to me, probably due to the absence of any cold snaps.

I used Orly airport's data cause it's closer to where I live and doesn't have all the flaws of the official Paris station, which is located in a park surrounded by 2 to 17 stories buildings. The problem with Orly is that it opened "only" in 1921, with a break between 1924 and 1944. I forgot to look at this Montsouris's records and 2011 appears to be only the 4th mildest since 1873 (mean temps). That is still in the 3% mildest, like for Orly airport.
Believe it or not, the warmest December average high at Orly airport is 50, like in 2011 (norm 45) and in Paris-Montsouris it's 51 (norm 46). So both only 5 degrees higher than the norm. You can't compare oceanic Paris with the Midwest or Alaska for deviation to the norms. A 5 degree positive deviation here is maybe as exceptional as a 15 deviation in the aforementioned regions.

Funny enough, in December, negative deviations can be signicantly wider. For example, last December was 8 degrees below normal considering highs in both weather stations. The biggest negative anomaly was in 1879 with a 27F average high (15 degrees below the norm at that time and 19 degrees below today's norms). The average low had an even bigger deviation since it was a cold 13F (20 degrees below the norms then and 25 degrees below today's norms). Such a deviation on the positive side would be completely impossible.
I guess it's due to the fact that in western Europe that most days are dominated by mild westerlies blowing directly from the Atlantic. So a month with almost only southwesterlies like 2011 wouldn't end too far from the climatic averages. On the contrary, a month with a 30 cm snowcover and little wind (or weak easterlies) like 1879 was has high chances to be much colder than climatic stats. Of course such a moth would happen once a century at most.

I don't like having such temperatures in winter. Knowing Paris's climate, I have low expectations in terms of wintry weather, but this December was particularly mild. On quite a lot of days I couldn't see my breath, which is the lower boundary of grossly mild winter weather for me.

From Environment Canada:

High: 3.0°C (38.66 °F)Low: -4.1 °C (24.62 °F)

Highest Temperature: 12 °C (53.6 °F)
Lowest Tempearaute: -10.7 °C (12.74 °F)

December '11 was the warmest December since 06 (running roughly 5 - 6 degrees above normal), though December 06 had colder lowest temperature compared to last year. I'm not sure when was the last time we didn't even get to single digits in December.

It's interesting to note though, that even though we're about 5 or 6 degrees above normal in December, it was still colder than normal January weather in some Northeastern places such New York City and Philadelphia. Apparently, I wouldn't need to go as far as Florida to escape our winter

Vancouver International Airport:

Average high: 6.6°C
Average low: 1.0°C
Average: 3.8°C
Highest high: 11.6°C on December 28th
Lowest high: 3.2°C on December 6th
Highest low: 7.5°C on December 28th
Lowest low: -5.0°C on December 12th
Total precip: 91.0mm
Total snowfall: 0cm
Total number of frosts: 14

Overall the temperature was slightly above average for December but much drier with only slightly more than half the average rainfall...

As per usual, the downtown station was much warmer with only 2 frosts and a low for the month of only -1.1°C. That heat island really does make a difference!
