From the old Gazette supplements I have, August doesn't seem right. However July - though very mild overall and also very wet in many places - had two cold snaps with snow "to low levels in the South Island"; one between the 3rd and 6th, the other from the 9th to the 11th.

The temp hovered around freezing all day and has only just now (at 3:30 PM) exceed 1 C. Today's high could easily be one of the coldest ever (current record is 1.2 C sometime in the 1930s).

It's 2.5 C now at 6:30 PM. It looks like tonight may be one of those weird situations where the night is warmer than the day. But it was certainly by far the coldest afternoon I can remember.

The sky is clearing and we're forecasted to drop to -2 C tonight and up to 9 C tomorrow. Afterwards the mild sunny weather should resume.

Wow, that is significant cold for you. The lack of clearing pavements/treating the roads sounds very familiar...snow accumulating during the day then melting at night when it warms up is common here as well.

Now 3.3 C. 11 C and sunny forecast for tomorrow. It feels like I'm in the twilight zone.
