Pfffff that's a common stereotypical misconception founded in Dickensian Novels and in movies. Probably also a reputation gained in the days of heavy smog before the clean air act in the 50's.

Probably 10-20 days with some morning fog. Days that remain foggy for most of the day can be counted on one hand.

Nothing like a crisp fog, that soon lifts for a mild-warm day -which is usually about this time of the year!
I usually have to leave to go to work very early in the morning, so fog is quite common as I head west and further inland.
Some elevated towns, where the fog hangs around to lunch time, can be quite frustrating -especially if you want to dry your clothes on the clothesline outside!

Fog sucks.. but I'd rather have warm fog than cold fog.

I guess you'd prefer steam then?

Really though, are fogs common in truly tropical/equatorial climes (never been to one myself)?

well not "steam" but warm vapour LOL...
In Southern china at certain times of the year there was fog/haze quite a lot but I think that is partly due to mountainous terrain and partly due to pollution. Mountains tend to trap clouds and make foggy areas whereas I think many flat areas in the tropics don't see much fog just blazing sunshine or high clouds, at least from my personal experience.

I've never experienced ice fog. Definitely want to, though, at some point.
