If this materializes, another rare winter weather event could occur in coastal and South Texas, as well as Louisiana.
The following locations are under a winter storm watch or warning:
Houston
McAllen
Brownsville
South Padre Island
Corpus Christi
Austin
San Antonio
Lake Charles, LA
Shreveport, LA
Baton Rouge, LA
Winter Weather Advisory in New Orleans
McAllen, TX is forecasted to drop down to 21 F tonight...only 2 F above the record low for the month of February. Windchills may be in the single digits. Right now they're sitting at 36 F after reaching a high of 42 F and low of 32 F. South Padre Island was sitting at 32 F early afternoon, but managed to reach 42 F as well. Current temperatures are in the mid-30s. Austin is sitting at 22 F after reaching a high of only 26 F. Low was 17 F. Yesterday, after reaching 66 F, the temperature plummeted to 19 F. San Antonio reached a toasty 29 F. They saw similar extreme swings in temperatures as well yesterday.
Based on NWS forecasts, it looks like a potential ice storm could occur with ice accumulations up to a quarter of an inch. Some areas may see anywhere from 1-4 inches of snow. Windchill values could be near zero in some locations.
McAllen: 29 F
Brownsville: 28 F
South Padre Island: 28 F
Corpus Christi: 26 F
Houston: 32 F
Austin: 21 F
San Antonio: 21 F
Dallas: 18 F
Lubbock: 8 F
Midland: 12 F
Laredo: 29 F
El Paso: 2 F
Louisiana
Lake Charles: 31 F
Baton Rouge: 30 F
New Orleans: 37 F
Shreveport: 25 F
Sleet, snow, and freezing rain also being reported in Mississippi and Alabama. Jackson, MS is sitting at 25 F. On the coast, Bioloxi is sitting at a balmy 35 F. Also 35 F in Mobile, AL. Some sleet is possible in Mobile, but it'll mostly be a rain event along the Gulf coast. Watches, warnings, and advisories are extending well into the deep south. A few other current temperatures:
Vicksburg, MS: 27 F
Memphis, TN: 23 F
Birmingham, AL: 28 F
Huntsville, AL: 24 F
Nashville, TN: 25 F
So generally a wintry day across the south with some unusual weather in South Texas. Areas not seeing the wintry precipitation will be enjoying a cold rain, including North Florida. Daytona Beach, Tampa, and southward are the only mild spots in the eastern half of the country today with temperatures in the 60s and 70s.
There are already road closures on Highway 77 from Brownsville to Harlingen, TX. due to icing on the highway. Hwy 83 from Harlingen to the Hildago County line is also closed. Just truly mouth-dropping weather occuring... a truly rare event!

Here in and around Corpus Christi, ALOT of the major roads are now shut down due to an ice storm in progress. I live in Portland, and work in Corpus, and unless I want to take a 60 mile journey around the backside, the only way I can get to work is to cross the bay and take either the Harbor Bridge or the Joe Fulton Corridor (which are now both closed). So, I will be taking a sick day tomorrow.

How much ice has accumulated so far? Any power outages?
