Coldest I've ever been camping was actually in October in N Maine when it was 20F outside. I had only a 3 season bag (don't know the temp rating) and was just miserable throughout the night.

Having the right gear makes all the difference in the world.

I found a sleeping bag rated to -21 C/-7 F is ideal when it's below 50 F outside.
In 33-49 F ambient, snug as a bug in a rug.
