So what happened TC? Deal go bad? That was such a harsh statement, it must have been something pretty bad.

I don't want to name names here.. But let's just say a member of the tribe who happened to have two relatives on the council tried to get me to bribe him so that I could land a sizable business deal. Needless to say, that is a felony.

I worked at the time for a publicly traded company. (not that it mattered except corporate council advised me to go to the Lummi Police just as I suspected they would)

I did, and they turned it over to the FBI. And let's just say the FBI Agent made it clear to me this was quite common out there.

Needless to say not only did I not get the deal,(several weeks worth of work went into this for me and a team of admins) but I've since been all but banned from doing business with them for doing the right thing. Not officially of course.

Sorry to heart that TC. I know you did not have to disclose any of that. Thanks for putting it out there though. Something to keep in mind.

Not that it matters... okay to me it does. Did anything come of the incident? I only ask because that is one of the areas my wife are considering. It would be nice to know if there is any justice and equality being upheld in the area. Or do I really need to avoid any and all business deals of the kind.

peace and respect,

Regardless of what they like to call themselves, Indian Tribes are not “Nations”.

They are private corporations governed by various traditions and rules who receive special privileges from the US government.

If you want to dance around Indian fires, you have to dance to Indian music.

And pay Indian fiddlers.

Or flute players.

Sounds like a whole new ball game. I guess I will have to learn where to play. Not a lot of tribal issues in Mishawaka ,IN (despite the Native American name of the city).

There is, however, some issues with a tribe just up in Michigan. Something about paying taxes to the city, casino, land....

I just have never had to concern myself in my city.
Like I said, whole new ball game.

Truth is I don't know. The FBI agent came to my house (Gotta love answering the door, unannounced) asked if he could come in (LOL, what am I gonna say?) He had me sign a deposition, and he told me he believed the perp would do some hard time.

Maybe the guy pleaded out. But what's wierd about it, the story regarding the arrest, which appeared in the Bellingham Herald is no longer "accessible" And now nothing come up.

This is not a reflection of justice in this area. All bets are off when you're dealing with Native Americans relating to justice as we know it.

The rule of thumb I would follow is to go into anything with them with both eyes open and one hand on your wallet.

Ferndale itself is a nice town. It's small and a bit conservative. Just 5 miles down the road is Bellingham. Much larger and it's a college town (WWU is the 3rd largest University in WA), so far more liberal. Bellingham is nestled up against Puget Sound to the West and Lake Whatcom to the east. Quite beautiful actually.

That's great. What has that to do with Indians in Washington, or are you simply educating us about Canada?

Thanks TC. I have been to Bellingham and I agree. It is a nice town. I am glad to hear more positive comments about the town. It is one of our prospective place to move to in summer 2011.

The "visit" sounds like it was a little unnerving. Hopefully everything turned out the way it was supposed to.

Thanks for your replies!

Peace and respect,

Just observing what a difference a few hundred miles makes in someone's legal and cultural status and the opinions generated thereof.
