Canadian native people are called First Nations people, First Nations man, First Nations couple, etc.

"Americans" are, of course, only citizens of the country with that word in its name, the United States of, uh, America.

Other cultures on the continent, in the hemisphere, and, in fact, in the entire world, are identified by the adjectival form of the name of their country, such as "Canadians".

A great way to get punched in the mouth by a Canadian is to insult him by calling him an American. Hahahaha!!!

Thanks Cats! I had never heard of "First Nations". That is interesting. So would it be correct to say "Canadian First Nations man" ?

Do you mean to say that everyone does not want to be an American? I am shocked!

Have a great day Cats!

Do you mean that those other countries use the term "American" to describe their coming from their respective countries, or that they consider themselves (United States) Americans?

I am afraid I don't follow.

I didn't mean anything about how they refer to themselves. I meant that a Paraguayan is as American as a Canadian as is a Mexican as is a Panamanian, which makes a snippy comment about Canadians being Americans technically accurate but pointless and disruptive, unless that person can propose a less inclusive demonym for 'persons of the United States.' Statesian? Usian? Stateese? United Stateite? I've been trying to come up with one for a generation and a half. If anyone has a more specific one, please in the names of all the gods, share it so we can stop dealing with this 'you aren't the only Americans' stuff.

While I can think of dozens of good reasons for Canadians to get sand in their backbacon over US behaviors and political actions, with just cause and righteous wrath, this one is petty and helps nothing. I'd think Canadians would be far more interested in US support for Arctic sovereignty rights than in the demonym we choose to refer to our own selves, which in point of fact, is our own choice anyway and has been since the days before Confederation.

Hi, West Coast! One Usian here. Doncha just love really smart tongue in cheek?

No, not "Canadian First Nations" because that phrase would be redundant. In Canada, the original residents and their descendents of the peoples residing in what is now the geopolitical entity called Canada are officially called "First Nations". Period. The phrase "First Nations" is a Canadain invention and is used internationally to refers to only those people having a prior claim to land within the geopolitcal boundaries of what is now called "Canada" -- the original residents and their descendents, not people of any other country. Similarly, the language "Native Americans" refers to only those people with a prior claim to land within the boundaries of the geopolitical entity now called "The United States of America" -- the original residents and their descendents. So, to drive this point straight into the ground, there's no such thing as "American First Nations" or "Australian First Nations" -- those would be self-cancelling statements since "First Nations" are only Canadian, and "Canadian First Nations" would be redundant. Make sense?

And in Canada, geographic areas which are treatied to, owned by and operated by individual First Nations are called "Reserves", and in the U.S. "reservations". So, in British Columbia there are several First Nations Reserves, and in WA there are several Native American reservations. Make sense?

Getting back on topic, I pretty much would not even consider a house on leased reservation land. I wouldn't even if I were an enrolled tribe member. One more capricious level of government, much harder to influence than a typical city or county government. If you are a "hoquat" or non-Indian, there may be some impulse to "jerk your chain".

A house on leased reservation land would only start to look like a deal to me if the total selling price was less than it would cost to build the house only - i.e. no money from me for land I don't and can't own, plus I don't pay full price for the house. Otherwise "no soup for you!"

I'm a Shelter Bay resident in the winters.....everything has become a major rip-off, all tribal related

Every few month its something else to begin charging for, since they prevailed in the lawsuit lease and back fees debacle which was a huge financial hit for residents

Prior to that it was a 25x increase in water fees..

Anything & everything associated with the Swinhomish Tribe should be avoided, including driving through

Wow! I had no idea things were so complicated when it comes to being politically correct... or incorrect.

I am sorry to hear that things are so rotten in Shelter Bay. My wife and I have a possible chance to buy my inlaws house there. Perhaps my fond memories should remain just that, memories. Most unfortunate. I really love that house and the view. Such is life.

Its way past just being complicated at this point. Any and all of the everyday protections that you have in the real world off the reservation, none of that applies here now....and your taxpayer funded BIA is of no help...they side with the indians at every turn

Nationwide this has become a huge problem...there are places in California where the tribes have forced lease-land residents to just walk away from homes...next day ya got a tribal member living in that home

There are cases where homes on reservation leaded lands were burned to the ground by the owner, and in one case bulldozed on a Sunday so a tribal member could not occupy the property

Drive the streets of Shelter Bay and look at all the For Sale signs...at least twice as many as you'll see off reservation.....there is a very good reason for that

The tribes all hire smart lawyers....

Buying a house on land owned by someone else makes no sense, regardless of who the "someone else" is.
If you don't have clear title to the land, you are really just renting and are at the mercy of the landowner.
