I think this was the second time the power has gone out on us Derek.
The last time was during the heat wave.
It’s 25 outside and 60 inside right now.
Our SUV’s have carved out the driveway and we aren’t stuck anymore so things are not that bad.

Wow, that fireplace sure does its job, apparently. Good thing you have it to heat the house. Ours is gas. So, if our power goes out we're screwed. Although it is somewhat less likely in suburbia land. lol

Ours is not sticking so far and won't today with the sun coming in and out. Maybe tonight we'll get more accumulation.

Derek

FSM, how much snow do you think you have?
We just started getting dumped on again so it’s about a good 8 inches.

Derek the wood burning stove is working well.
We normally use a fan to push down heat from up high.
Currently we have several containers of snow melting on the stove to use for flushing the potty .

Well, just like that the sun came out and melted the snow here. Maybe more on tap for tonight.

We have 8 and it's still snowing.

So explain this rural living thing...

You can't flush toilets without electricity? I guess that means no running water at all?

I'm actually terrified of a power outage in these conditions. All of us "green" suburbanites should be. Honorable intentioned suburban building code allow only for gas and electricity powered fireplaces. So without power nobody is getting heat.

I've long said that if we were to stay in the area we'd get an old home with a wood or pellet stove/fireplace.

Ah - I should have mentioned in my winter prep post.... we keep a clean new garbage can full of water right out the back door on our protected porch... and that won't freeze unless it's really cold. When really cold is expected I have been known to move this into the bathtub inside. Still waiting to see on that now.

We have about 200 gallons in four drums for potable water, for us and animals, but the garbage can is for me to flush - my luxury I don't want to skimp on!

No electricity, no well pump, without a generator that can be plugged in to it.

We have a free standing propane fireplace - it will still work when the power is out. No fan, but it will still work and provide heat.

Pellet stoves will NOT work without power for the fan. Major knock against them, IMHO.

I also wouldn't want to give up my gravity septic, no pumps, no power needed.
