I am moving to Yakima for work. Is there any safe upscale areas. I understand Yakima isn't Seattle area, but I do want to feel safe and a bit higher end during my two years there. I don't have children, so school districts are not a concern, other than the quality of schools can indicate the quality of the area. Is Ellensburg or Tri Cities a viable alternative?

Tri-cities commute is a bit of a haul, 90 minutes, while Ellensburg is only 40. It will be a lot longer in winter if it snow, however, and they get 28" average. Yakima has it's nice areas, like Summitview. I would also look at Prosser, Sunnyside and Benton City though they are small.

Generally, west Yakima is better.

I lived in the TC sixteen years and have relatives in Crackima. Hemlock is right. Thing is, while the weather is more an issue over the ridges between Yakima and Ellensburg, especially Manastash, it can also be a factor between Yakima and Richland. In particular, there are some areas near Prosser that don't get a lot of shade, are very curvy with elevation changes, and where most people tend to drive like fighter pilots. Which is fine unless there's black ice that lasts well into the morning due to the shadows.

Benton City doesn't get you around that. Prosser, which is a rather nice little town, would still be a long commute but it would be away from the charms of Yakima's grungier areas. I've heard nice things about Selah.

OP, if you take a look at the north-west corner of Yakima or in Summit Heights, you will find some rather upscale areas. Selah is also good.

What part of town are you working in? Don't set yourself up to have to drive across the whole city every day.

You may want to live outside city limits, the Yakima city government and services are generally not as good as the county, IMHO.

I agree with the others that living even as far away as Prosser does not really make sense. In the winter the commute would get old.
