We're hoping to move to either Port Townsend or Port Ludlow soon. We were originally most interested in Port Townsend, but are a little disappointed in the housing selections there. We started looking at Port Ludlow and found quite a few more houses to our liking. Plus it seems like you get a whole lot more house for your money there. We're trying to figure out the reason for this. Is the weather that much worse down in Port Ludlow? Or is it because it's much further away from town? It seems like both places have a lot of walking paths and being close to a path is one of our main criteria in a location. Nightlife and shopping aren't very important to us although being a ways away from a variety of restaurants is a bit of a drawback in Port Ludlow. I'd appreciate hearing the locals views on this.

Thanks,
George

With parents in Port Angeles we hang out in that area a lot. Port Townsend is more of an artsy, almost hippie town but with a great historical downtown area. Port Ludlow is much smaller, about 1/10th, but more expensive, with a lot of well-off retirees. Port Townsend is an easier drive to shopping in Sequim, while Port Ludlow is a quicker trip to Seattle, if you want major entertainment.
PT gets less rain by about 1/3 as it's still at the tail end of the rain shadow.

Port Ludlow doesn't have the amenities that Port Townsend does. It's more isolated from shopping and entertainment. It's kind of like a satellite of Port Townsend, which may be why it's cheaper.

Which aspect of Port Ludlow is more expensive? From what I'm seeing on real estate sites, you get a lot more house in Port Ludlow than PT. The same style and size house with the same amount of land is often $50k less in Port Ludlow.

That probably has more to do with the Property Tax system of PT compared to Port Ludlow.
