Hello all,

I have recently been made a job offer with a few locations to choose from.

They are as follows:

Blaine, WA
Lynden, WA
Point Roberts, WA
Sumas, WA

I used to live in Issaquah, outside of Seattle, and wish I could be closer to Seattle proper, but such is life. I was very young when I lived there and don't remmeber much. So I am looking for all the info I can get on the above places. Living conditions, places to live/commute, community, schools, etc. The wife is a bit of a city brat and has a mild obsession with Whole Foods. Would it be possible to appease her and live somewhere in between Seattle and Blaine for example? Is that commute doable?

Some of these places are right out in the boonies it seems. For example, Point Roberts seems to be basically Canada. How does a US Citizen live there? haha

Any help here would be appreciated . Thanks!

I'd go with Blaine, live in Ferndale. There is a Whole Foods in Vancouver BC, but Bellingham has a Trader Joe's at least. Pt. Roberts is USA but you have to go through Canada a long way around to get back here unless you have a good boat.

Pt. Roberts seems like quite the commute!

So if I go with Blaine, should I live in Ferndale or Bellingham? Can you tell me any more about the areas? I understand they are small towns, but how small are we talking? Remmeber, the wife is used to cities haha.

Pt. Roberts is directly across border from a Vancouver suburb with a grocery store, etc. Folks who make regular crossings use the nexus lanes at the Blaine crossing.

Think of Pt. Roberts as an island.

Your best bet would be to live in or near Bellingham and commute to Blaine, Lynden, or Sumas.

In that northern part of the state Bellingham is close as you will get to a real city. It's a college town, but beautiful, and has most of the shopping and entertainment you will need. You may still have to go up to Vancouver BC or down to Seattle once in a while for big name concerts or professional sports, but if Ferndale is too small for you, then Bellingham is about the only choice.

Nice place. It's a college town with two downtowns*and the hub city for about 250,000 people. Its home to Western Washington Univ., the 3rd largest in the state, a community college, and a technical college. There is a mall on the north side of town and another mall and a bunch of outlet stores about 20 miles south in Burlington. Bellingham is the southern terminus of the Alaska Marine System ferries.

Hopefully Lamplight will see this thread and chime in. In the meantime, I suggest looking at the Washington State Photos thread, where Lamplight quite regularly posts pictures from in and around Bellingham. It will at least give you an idea of what the area currently looks like.

I'd narrow that down a little more. Someone just said in another thead that the Bellingham-Sumas commute is awful in the winter. It's also a much longer commute than the others.

Commute to Blaine or Lynden. I'd pick Blaine because of the freeway.
