Hi,
We're moving to the Port Orchard area, and my big concern is the size of S. Kitsap High School, and its emphasis on sports. We have a son who will be a junior, great kid, smart, gets along well with just about everyone, but not a jock. Would he be better off at Peninsula High? Also, is it difficult to enroll out of district? Thank you for any and all feedback on the high school-age cultures!

I don't think that S Kitsap has any more emphasis on sports than most other high schools. The size is definitely a concern. Peninsula is generally rated higher, but class size plays a big part in that. S Kitsap, due to the heavy military population there, has a very difficult time getting bonds and levies to pass. Gig Harbor, since it's less transient of a community, tends to get better funding.
That being said, S Kitsap isn't a terrible school. I'd imagine your son would do fine there.
Yes, it is very difficult to enroll out of district. Peninsula Dist is looking into allowing out of area students for the first time, but I don't know that it has been approved yet.
If schools are the big concern, I'd look into moving to Gig Harbor if that's a possibility.
Otherwise, I think that your son will be fine at SK.

Thanks for your insights- it really helps! We did find a house in Port Orchard to rent for awhile as we get moved and re-adjusted. I love it up there: lots of very nice friendly, people!
