Hello:

I'm considering appling for a position in dowtown DC by L'Enfant Plaza. I will be coming from PA and was thinking of renting an apartment as close to "home" as possible which would be SShady grove or Rockville MD.

I would appreciate any advice.......i.e...where to rent, how long the metro ride may be, etc...

Regards,

EI

Shady Grove to L'Enfant Plaza is about 45 minutes, including a change of trains at Metro Center, but not including travel time to/from the station at either end. The one-way rush-hour fare is $3.90. There are plenty of places to rent out that way...Germantown, Gaithersburg, Montgomery Village, even Olney would all be in play. Things can get a bit pricey, but there are certainly affordable spots around as well...

Saganista covered good basic info. I would not automatically conclude if I were you that I should live in Rockville/Shady Grove. That commute and dealing with heavy traffic almost constantly (even though it is the burbs) may get to you after awhile, and the far-flung-suburban "scene" is not the same as the city's (some people find the former b-o-r-i-n-g, while others just don't care for the city). You might want to give living downtown a try if you get the job.
Rents in a good apartment complex in a good neighborhood in Rockville/SG (do some research on that) can be surprisingly high--lots of corporations and government offices in the burbs, and people need housing --plus you've got commuting thrown in.

Shady Grove to L'Enfant? Don't do this to yourself. The proximity to PA is not worth it if you spend ten hours a week commuting between work and home. If you do get the job, consider living in DC proper or NOVA along the Yellow Line train.
