Never stayed there, but have been to pick up my IYHF card. That was some time ago. Since then, the area has improved and I believe they have renovated it.

I think it would qualify as centrally located.

There are several hostels in DC. You'll have to be more specific.

I stayed at Hilltop Hostel in DC...next to Takoma Metro station in DC.

Hostel DC

I liked it. $24/night. Good location for subway access anyways, and in DC. Maybe not ideal if you wanted to be in the heart of touristic DC though.

I didn't know that. I was reading more into it and thinking maybe staying at a regular hotel would probably better suit my needs.

Thanks for the responses.

Several local places call themselves hostels, but the one that's officially affiliated with IYHF is on 10th street between K and L, Northwest. I would bet there are guest reviews of it, on the following site Reviews of Hotels, Flights and Vacation Rentals - TripAdvisor and click on "District of Columbia" then "Hotels".

The IYHF is just a chain of hostels with lots of locations throughout the world. Some are great, others are scuzzy. If you buy a membership with IYHF you get a discount on rooms (~10%), but IYHF is usually more expensive than other places for what you get.

You should go to hostels.com or hostelworld.com. You get prices for all the hostels and good reviews (i.e. superclean, great location, bedbugs, slummy neighborhood, nasty bathrooms).

Just be careful if you book through any third party site, because they typically charge a 10% fee if you cancel AND they require you to cancel through them and directly through the hostel itself to get a refund. The YMCA hostels are notorious for charging no show fees equal to a night's stay for those that cancelling without getting a confirmation number directly through them.
